We Joined the Preschool Autism Summit 2025!

MySpecialKids.com (MSK) was delighted to attend the Preschool Autism Summit 2025, hosted by Autism Little Learners. Even with a free pass, the experience was invaluable — we gained fresh insights into the latest trends in autism research, emerging practices for preschoolers, and the many different sub-types of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The summit gathered world-renowned experts and practitioners in early childhood autism, and we at MSK learned tremendously from their sessions. We left with not just new knowledge, but also inspiration to continue supporting families of children with special educational needs (SEN).

Key Learnings from the Summit

Here are some of the highlights that stood out for us:

  • PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance):
PDA is a sub-profile of autism where children display an extreme avoidance of everyday demands due to high anxiety. Learning about PDA helped us better understand how diverse autism presentations can be, and how important it is to tailor approaches for each child.
  • Play-Based Interventions:
Several experts shared the benefits of structured yet flexible play-based learning in preschool autism support, highlighting how play can encourage communication, social interaction, and self-regulation.
  • Gestalt Language Processing:
A fascinating session explained how some autistic children learn language in chunks (echolalia) rather than word-by-word. This deepened our appreciation for different communication styles and how speech therapy strategies can adapt to support them.
  • Family Support & Parent Training:
Another session stressed the importance of empowering parents with tools and knowledge, since they are a child’s first and most consistent teachers.
  • Latest Trends in ASD Research:
We also heard about ongoing research into sensory processing differences, co-occurring conditions such as ADHD and anxiety, and innovative preschool strategies to create inclusive learning environments.

A Resource for Parents and Educators

One of the best takeaways from the Summit was the reminder that parents of autistic children and educators can find many free tips, strategies, and printable materials on the Autism Little Learners website. These practical resources can be used right away at home or in the classroom to support learning, behavior, and communication.

Looking Ahead

MSK strongly encourages our readers, educators, and parents to take part in next year’s Preschool Autism Summit organised by Autism Little Learners. Whether you are new to the world of SEN or an experienced parent or professional, the Summit is a fantastic opportunity to learn, connect, and grow.
